Resolutions pledging unswerving support of Israel and charting new goals for education and fund-raising came at the culmination of four days of intensive debates at the recent 32nd South African Zionist Conference.
Other resolutions expressed “gratification to the people of South Africa for their understanding attitude towards Israel,” appreciation for “the transfer and trade facilities provided by the South African government” and hoped for “an ever-in-creasing two-way trade between the two countries.” The conference also denounced the Soviet “ransom price” being placed on Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate.
Ambassador Michael Michael, charge d’affaires of the Israel Legation in South Africa, brought greetings from the Israel government and stressed Israel’s desire to achieve peace in the Middle East. Israel Consul-General Itzhak Unna emphasized the importance of concentrating on the advancement of Jewish education in South Africa and on aliya to Israel, and urged greater efforts to support the Israel United Appeal.
The financial session of the conference noted that there had been a decline in contributions to the Israel United Appeal. As a result, delegates voted to upgrade information and organization work as the best means of securing a heightened appreciation of Israel’s needs. Julius Weinstein, a member of the Revisionist Party, was unanimously endorsed as chairman of the South African Zionist Federation.
