Egyptians fired four Russian-made SAM-type surface-to-air missiles at Israeli planes flying over the eastern bank of the Suez Canal this afternoon. The planes evaded the missiles and returned safely to their bases, a military spokesman reported. The incident was the first since last July 24 when four missiles were fired at Israeli planes from the region of Ismailia in the central section of the Suez Canal zone. The missiles fired today were launched from the same area at a distance of about 15 kilometers from the canal. The incident occurred at 2:20 p.m. local time. Israel has lodged a complaint with the United Nations cease-fire observation organization.
