A Tel Aviv district court ruled today that Rabbi Meir Kahane’s pass” port should be returned to him but barred the leader of the Jewish Defense League from going to the United States so that his presence In Israel will be assured at the trial in connection with JDL attempts to smuggle arms abroad. Rabbi Kahane, whose passport will be returned on Sunday, was ordered to post IL 150,000 ball. The delay was ordered to give the prosecution time to appeal to the Supreme Court against the district court’s decision.
Rabbi Kahane’s passport was confiscated by police when he was arrested a week ago. He was subsequently released on bail but a lower court upheld the right of the police to retain his passport. The district court said today that it was convinced that Rabbi Kahane has decided to settle in Israel and would appear in court when called. However, It enjoined him from going to the US on grounds that he faces an injunction there and might be prevented against his will from returning to Israel.
