Israeli police are examining a suspected letter bomb mailed from New Delhi, India. The letter, addressed to a private residence in Jerusalem, was spotted by Tel Aviv postal workers who turned it over to police. Police said the envelope was the same size and shape of letter bombs mailed from Amsterdam several weeks ago.
(The well-informed Dutch weekly Elseviers, reported today that Dutch authorities released letter bomb carrier Kibhi Khalum two weeks ago for fear that Dutch hostages would be taken by Arab terrorists if he were kept in jail. Khalum, an El Fatah member employed by the Algerian diplomatic service, warned that if he wasn’t released, hostages would be taken on a KLM plane and on the ground, the weekly reported, Dutch authorities said at the time of Khalum’s release that they could not disprove his claim that he was not aware of the deadly contents of his baggage.
(Yehudi Menuhin, the violin virtuoso currently on a concert tour of Holland, was given police protection following anonymous telephone threats to his manager. Menuhin is guarded by plainclothes men during his performances.)
