Ossietzky Medal to Jewish Writer

The Jewish writer and co-founder of the German branch of Amnesty International, Carola Stern, was awarded this year’s Carl von Ossietzky Medal in Berlin. At the presentation ceremony Sunday, Stern, who lives in Cologne, appealed for a fight against the persecution and torture of political prisoners throughout the world.

The Carl von Ossietzky Award is named for the Jewish publisher and 1935 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who died in 1938 in a Nazi concentration camp. West German President Gustav Heinemann, recently announced the creation of a Carl von Ossietzky professorship for peace research at Bonn University.

The Pen Club of Brazil will celebrate Thursday in Rio de Janeiro the 100th birthday anniversary of Hayim Nahman Bialik.

Israel Aircraft Industries will build a large airplane factory in the town of Bierzet, Belgium. J.A.I. will build the “Arava” plane and electronic equipment for “Gabriel” missiles.
