The Zionist Organization of America, deploring the United Nations General Assembly Sixth (Legal) Committee’s vote sidetracking strong legal action against terrorism, today urged the United States to convene a conference of concerned nations–outside the framework of the United Nations–to enact multilateral anti-terrorism treaties.
Rabbi Joseph P. Sternstein, chairman of the ZOA National Executive Committee, declared in a statement that the Committee “abrogated a moral responsibility” by approving a resolution concerned primarily with exploring the causes of terrorist acts instead of voting on stronger resolutions which would have resulted in international conventions against terrorism.
Rabbi Sternstein commended the United States for its efforts to gain approval of the stronger anti-terrorism resolutions. But he said the Committee’s vote “leaves the United States with no other viable recourse but to take the initiative in calling a conference which would seek primarily to institute joint international actions against nations that encourage, sanction or aid terrorist activities.”
