Fifty-two Moscow Jews have issued an appeal to “Jews in the West who are engaged in trade with the Soviet Union.” The appeal released here by the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry was reportedly written a few days before the arrival of Treasury Secretary George Shultz in Moscow. The appeal said in part:
“You are commencing business relations with the Soviet Union. Your opponents of yesterday are your partners in business today….But your success will be ephemeral and your strength like a phantom should you be apathetic to the fate of the sons of your people….”
Continuing, the appeal declared that “the day of adversity has arrived. Today, when you sit at the negotiating table with the Soviet Union, tens of Jews suffer in prisons because of their desire to go to Israel….Today, a fabulous sum is demanded for a higher education that was received free of charge in the Soviet Union.”
The Jews asked. “Will you dare to observe all this with indifference?..You are sitting at the negotiating table. We wish you success. Let your business partners know that you share our hopes, that our suffering pains you. Let them know that you insist on the rights of your brothers to live on the soil of Israel…”
Yohanan Cohen Israel’s new Ambassador to Rumania, presented his credentials to President Nicolae Ceausescu in Bucharest today, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced. President Ceausescu expressed satisfaction over the development of relations between Rumania and Israel.
