Mayor John V. Lindsay greeted Israel today in a message wishing the Jewish State a happy birthday and shalom on its 25th anniversary May 7. “Israel has profound meaning to the Jewish people, but not only to the Jewish people.” he stated. “It is the Holy Land to three faiths, and it is a vibrant dynamic democracy in an area of the world with few democratic institutions.”

Lindsay noted that Israel has served “as a model and inspiration for the young and emerging nations of the world, for Israel has shown how a small nation, with limited natural resources, can pull herself up by her own bootstraps, and remain true to its ideals of freedom and justice for all its people.”

Jacob Stein, national Jewish leader and chairman of the American Committee for Israel’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, announced today that the New York City Committee for Israel’s 25th Anniversary, chaired by Abraham Feinberg, is sponsoring a six-week “Salute to Israel” with the full cooperation of the City of New York.

The New York “Salute” will begin with a City Hall gathering at noon Wednesday and will bring together Jewish day school students, Jewish communal leaders and civic personalities for special ceremonies and a reading of an anniversary proclamation by Lindsay. It will conclude June 10 with a gala “Salute to Israel” parade along Fifth Avenue sponsored by the American Zionist Youth Foundation.
