The country’s 500 high school principals and inspectors began a strike this morning in a demand for higher wage rates. They called on the ministries of education and finance to resume wage negotiations before Friday, or else they might take “stronger measures.”
Last minute efforts by leaders of the Histadrut Teachers Union, most of whose members teach in elementary schools, to avert a strike failed over the weekend. There has been no contact between the teachers and the authorities since.
The teachers threatened that if no progress is made the elementary school teachers may join the strike, and thus may disrupt the opening of the school year in less than two weeks. The teachers claim that Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir promised them earlier this month a monthly average rise of IL 100 and that he is now going back on the promise. About 150,000 high school students may be affected.
