A telephone call from Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem to Hadassah headquarters here reports: the hospital and the city are calm; morale is extremely high; all doctors of military age have been called up, but no medical aid is requested at this time; all ambulatory patients have been evacuated and 320 beds are available for casualties; emergency rooms are fully mobilized; as of today the hospital has received 50 casualties. The first wounded arrived from the southern front early Sunday morning. During the day others arrived by ambulance.
Rose E. Matzkin, national president of Hadassah, explained that war casualties would be taken to the hospitals in Israel nearest the fighting but that special cases requiring sophisticated care would be sent directly to Hadassah–She also reported that Gadna Youth Corps volunteers are serving as stretcher-bearers; American year-course students in Israel in Hadassah’s Hashachar program are either working on kibbutzim or volunteering in hospitals; an emergency crech for children of hospital personnel staffed by American students at Hadassah has been set up; 10 new immigrant doctors are working at Hadassah; and emergency stockpiling of medical and hospital supplies is adequate.
