Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon returned from the U.S. today and said no decision has yet been made on the next step in the Middle East negotiations. Allon, who will report to the Cabinet at a special meeting this week, told reporters at Ben Gurion Airport that his talks with American officials were mainly consultations and clarifications of attitudes and problems aimed at preventing a new war.
The next step will come after other Israeli and Arab officials bold talks in Washington this month, Allon noted. He said he was satisfied with his visit and that relations between Israel and the U.S. are as good as ever and that there is even some positive progress in some areas. Allon said he had discussed the problem of Soviet and Syrian Jews with members of the Administration and Congress during his visit to Washington as well as with Jewish leaders in New York with whom he met yesterday. He said all were ready for any action to ease the situation of Jews in the two countries and to help open the gates for emigration.
The Foreign Minister said he had discussed with Administration officials the dangers arising from the Soviet Union’s intensive supply of arms to the Arab countries, and that the officials expressed understanding of the problem. He said he hoped this understanding would lead to material results.
