An arms purchase mission of key officers of Israel’s Defense Force left today for Washington to seek specific agreements on new weapons agreed to in general terms by President Nixon during his June visit to Israel. The mission is headed by Gen. Herzl Shaftir, head of army’s general headquarters.
Israeli officials have been seeking for several months agreements to provide for long-range supplies of new weapons in place of the current practice of annual re-negotiations for arms. Nixon agreed to the idea in principle, leaving details to be worked out in Washington. Observers here said Israel wanted new warplanes, tanks and other heavy equipment, as well as anti-aircraft missiles and anti-tank weapons.
The delegation includes Gen. Mordechai Hod, a former Air Force Commander, who is now senior advisor to Defense Minister Shimon Peres. The new military attache in Washington, Avraham Adan, will join in the talks.
