Nineteen prominent Protestant and Roman Catholic religious leaders, meeting here in connection with the 1974 session of the American Academy of Religion, issued a statement sternly criticizing the United Nations General Assembly for its “ill-advised” invitation to Yasir Arafat to address the United Nations. They said the UN action was improper because: Israel is a member of the UN while Arafat represents a group out to destroy Israel; the PLO is committed to terrorism and atrocity “that shock human sensibilities”; and the invitation jeopardizes the prospects for peace negotiations in the Mideast.
