Ikrit and Biram, two abandoned villages near the Lebanese border, were hooked up to the national water supply system Thursday indicating that the government may soon permit the return of their original Arab Christian inhabitants who were forced to evacuate for security reasons during Israel’s war for independence in 1948. The water pipes were laid by the Mekorot water company at the government’s request on the recommendation of its advisor on minority affairs, Shmuel Toledano.
