Itzhak Korn, general secretary of the World Labor Zionist movement, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here that he found that the deteriorating economic and political situation which has severely hit the Argentine middle class is also seriously affecting Jewish institutions. “I have found a substantial change for the worse since my last visit here in 1973.” he noted.
Korn, who is also chairman of the Israel branch of the World Jewish Congress, is here for the fourth Argentine Labor Zionist Congress. He urged that wealthy local Jews do their utmost to save Jewish institutions here. He also said that world Jewish organizations will have to help thousands of families here, many of whom will have to make aliya.
Only 17 percent of Jewish children in Argentina receive some kind of Jewish education, Korn said he was told. The Labor Zionist Congress decided to take emergency action to save Jewish schools and other institutions here as well as to urge increased aliya.
Meanwhile, it was learned that the official Argentine policy for the upcoming conference of non-aligned countries in Lima will be to exert a moderating influence on Mideast questions. Argentina will oppose the proposed expulsion of Israel from the United Nations both at Lima and at the General Assembly meeting in September.
