Israel Aircraft Industries and other military industries will dismiss close to 4000 workers shortly in an effort to cut expenses by Israel’s military establishment. The dismissals were seen as the Defense Ministry’s response to criticism that it was not doing enough to prune its costs in view of Israel’s severe economic situation.
A spokesman for Israel Aircraft Industries, one of the country’s largest weapons producers, said dismissal notices were being prepared for about 3000 of its employes. Close to 1000 more will lose their jobs in other military industries in what is expected to be the largest wave of dismissals since the economic downturn in 1966. Military sources have warned that the dismissals may reduce “the potential production” of the military industries.
