Tel Aviv University students demanded today that President Luis Echeverria return the honorary doctorate awarded him by the university on his recent visit to Israel because of Mexico’s vote for the anti-Zionist draft resolution in the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee. The demand was contained in a cable sent to the Mexican President by the University. Students Association with copies to UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and to the Mexican Embassy here. The cable declared that Echeverria was not worthy of the honor conferred on him.
Prof. Shlomo Simonson, Rector of Tel Aviv University, has also cabled Echeverria expressing shook over the Mexican vote and asking for an explanation inasmuch as Echeverria had expressed friendship for Israel when he visited here. Tel Aviv University students will leave classes for several hours later this week to demonstrate at the Mexican Embassy. Demonstrations are expected tonight at the Tel Aviv sports stadium where a Mexican soccer team, just arrived in Israel, is scheduled to play an Israeli team. The students have urged the Football Association to call off the match.
