An ad hoc coalition of some 100 prominent American Jews voiced their support this weekend for the demonstration against the Kadum settlement. In a statement, they said that further Jewish settlements on the West Bank are an "obstacle to peace efforts."
Support for the demonstration was cabled to the Israeli demonstration’s organizers. Among the signers of the statement were Rabbi Balfour Brickner, Phyllis Chesler, Prof. Leo Diesendruck, Betty Friedan, Rabbi Everett Gendler. Herbert Gold, Vivian Gornick, Irving Howe, Moshe Kagan, Robert Loeb, Rabbi David Polish, Rabbi Joachim Prinz, Morris U. Schappes, I.F. Stone, Rabbi Max Ticktin and Prof. George Wald.
The statement said, in part, that the signers are "American Jews who are ardent supporters of Israel’s existence" and that they were joining "with all people committed to a secure Israel in building a just and equitable peace."
GUSH CHARGED WITH BREACH OF FAITH

(The group’s threats now to oppose their forcible removal from Kadum, should the government decide upon it, contravened the December agreement, Guri wrote. In December, all parties had agreed to abide by a Cabinet decision to be taken after a full-scale debate on West Bank settlement.
(Guri wrote he did not expect the government to decide on forcible removal, and hoped for a peaceful solution. But it was "a breach of basic decency" for the Gush now to threaten to oppose the government’s decision–whatever it was.)
