JERUSALEM (Jun. 24)
The Knesset Labor Committee called on the government yesterday to prepare a contingency job plan for immigrants to prevent unemployment. A report issued by the committee said a new immigrant’s success in his job could make or break his stay in the country, and it was up to the government to see that immigrants are offered appropriate jobs.
The Labor Committee discussed the issue, after receiving complaints of dismissals of immigrants to prevent them from attaining tenure. The Histadrut was also asked by the committee to help through its works committees to ease the absorption of an immigrant in a new job. The Labor Committee said the Histadrut should push for a clause in all collective work agreements to ensure that arbitrary dismissals are forbidden.
