Dr. Judah J. Shapiro, president of the Labor Zionist Alliance, said Sunday that there is a need for Labor Zionist groups in America to press for the restoration of discussions in the U.S. of the ideological definitions of Zionism and its program. Addressing the organization’s National Executive Committee, Shapiro said that “Many American Jews were reluctant to criticize Israel.” But, he said, the Labor Zionist movement cannot act here on either the teachings of the past or on directives of the leadership in the U.S. and Israel but must come forward with its own positions emerging from its unique American experience. Only then could it “engage in a fruitful dialogue with Israel,” he said.
