Chaim Herzog. Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, has decided not to quit his post in order to run for office in the May 17 general elections. Herzog was considering in the last few months the possibility of resigning his Ambassadorship to have discussed this matter with the Labor Party and the Democratic Movement for Change while visiting Israel last month.

But Herzog explained today that he decided not to resign because he does not feel “it would be right for me to leave my post at the UN at this critical stage of serious developments in the Mideast.” Herzog in scheduled to leave next week for Israel to take part in Secretary General Kurt Waldheim’s discussions with the Israeli government. Waldheim is scheduled to visit Israeli Feb, 10-11 as part of his tour of Mideast capitals to make progress toward the reconvening of the Geneva pace conference.
