An American Congressional delegation headed by Rep. Joshua Eilberg (D. Pa.), chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, citizenship and international law, visited Budapest’s main synagogue and conferred at length with leaders and members of the local Jewish community. It is believed to be the first such visit in post-war years.

The Congressional delegation first visited the community building where they met with a large Hungarian delegation led by Prof. Sandor Scheiber. Then they visited the Maiz Synagogue where they met with the Chief Rabbi and members of the Jewish Religious Council. The delegation also visited the old Jewish cemetery, the Jewish Museum and various communal installations. In the meetings, which took place last week, the Congressional delegation inquired about the situation of Jews in Hungary.
