The authoritative privately-owned Armed Forces Journal published an article today claiming that the regime of Premier Menachem Begin has made Israel “a militaristic state whose military build-up has gone for beyond the requirements of defense.” The writer, Anthony Cordesman, a former civilian employee of the Pentagon and now with the Department of Energy, listed a number of “tools” the U.S. might employ to restrain Begin and possibly “force the collapse of his coalition” without endangering Israel. He contended that “some extreme American Jewish groups always seem willing to use anti-Semitism and the Holocaust as a moral club.” (See full story P. 3.)
