Premier Menachem Begin of Israel and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt were named today by the Ben Gurion University of the Negev as the recipients of the first Ben Gurion University Amity Award for ï¿??outstanding contribution toward understanding between the peoples of the Middle East. ï¿??Nessim Gaon, chairman of the universityï¿??s board of governors who accompanied the Israeli delegation to the peace talks in Ismailia, was asked today in a cable from university president Yosef Tekoah to personally notify the recipients.
The universityï¿??s executive committee, in naming the two leaders for the award, cited them for ï¿??their courage and wisdom in opening the gates of understanding in the Middle East.ï¿?? Tekoah added that the university, which is renowned for its desert research activities and share in regional development, is prepared to cooperate with Egypt toward the development of its vast desert area. Formal presentation of the award to Begin and Sadat will take place at a later date.
