Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan, returning from Washington this evening, said the word “crisis” used to define the present state of relations between the United States and Israel was inappropriate. Dayan, who accompanied Premier Menachem Begin at his White House talks with President Carter Tuesday and Wednesday, acknowledged that there are differences. But there was no hint or actual pressure by the Americans to force Israel into accepting the American attitude and viewpoints.
A Cabinet source today said that there was a great deal of understanding between Carter and Begin, that Carter wants to avoid a confrontation with Israel on the Lebanese issue and that Israel would pull its forces out of south Lebanon but it would probably take several weeks to do so. The source predicted that negotiations with Egypt would resume. He cited President Anwar Sadat’s assertion of his desire to keep the momentum going despite Israel’s operation in Lebanon and his moderate reaction to the Israeli move.
