PARIS (Jun. 6)
Mayor Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem arrived here this afternoon on a three-day visit as the guest of Mayor Jacques Chirac. Earlier, Chirac, who is a top leader of the Gaullist Party, issued a statement saying that his invitation should not be interpreted “as a stand on the political status of Jerusalem” which is a matter to be settled by the parties involved in the Mideast dispute.
He stressed that the invitation was part of his efforts to develop relations between Paris and other major cities. He noted however that Jerusalem “has a special character as a place from which to launch a peace and reconciliation program.”
Kollek is visiting the memorial to the unknown Jewish martyrs this afternoon and will confer with Chirac later at the city hall. Tomorrow he will be guest of honor at a banquet given by the Mayor and the Municipal Council.
