A draft resolution calling for an arms embargo against Israel was introduced last night by Iraq in the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly special session on disarmament. The draft resolution, which is cosponsored by 26 other nations, called on all states, the United States in particular, to cooperate in an arms embargo against Israel. It called also for an end to the transfer of all nuclear equipment or fissionable material or technology to Israel. The Iraqi draft called on the Security Council to impose the arms embargo on Israel.
Diplomats at the United Nations said today that the majority of the United Nations membership would like to remove the Iraqi proposal from the disarmament discussions and possibly put it off until the regular session of the General Assembly, scheduled to open here in September. The diplomats also expressed the view that the Iraqi resolution does not have a chance to be approved by the Security Council since the United States is most likely to veto it.
Israel denounced the draft as a “disruptive and divisive” resolution filled with “lies and distortions.” The Israeli representative to the Ad Hoc Committee, Ambassador Sharmmai Kahana, said that Iraq “rounded up” a group of countries that would “like nothing better than to see Israel deprived of defense while they build up their arsenals.”
