Israeli schools are scheduled to reopen Sept. I but school children may have a longer summer vacation than planned as the teachers are threatening a strike.

The Teachers Association charges that the new contract should have been agreed upon during the summer but the government showed little concern and there were few meetings on negotiations. Only when the school year starts and the children remain at home will the government get down to business, declared Dr. Reuben Aviram of the Teachers Association.

Officials of the Ministry of Education say that two meetings were held with the teachers but the gap between them is wide. The Knesset Education and Culture Committee has urged the two sides to settle the dispute as quickly as possible.
