Gov. Hugh Carey has proclaimed May 14 as “Jerusalem Day” in New York State. Declaring in his proclamation that Jerusalem “is a holy city,” Carey also said that “for the Jewish people, it is not only a city of holy places, it is a city that for two and a half millennia has served as the symbol of hope for a people who were persecuted, hunted and massacred, but who never despaired of its promise …. Jerusalem will always be the eternal capital of the Jewish people; the symbol of their hopes and the focus of their prayers.”
