An Israeli border policeman shot by a sniper in East Jerusalem yesterday, underwent surgery this morning for a stomach wound and was reported to be in satisfactory condition. The incident occurred in brood daylight near the Herod’s Gate, a busy commercial district crowded with shoppers and tourists.
The police have refused to release details of their investigation but it was learned that several of the dozens of suspects rounded up immediately after the shooting are still being held. The majority of them have been releases.
Security agencies are also investigating the planting of a heavy anti-personnel mine on a dirt road near the Jewish settlement of Givon on the West Bank north of Jerusalem this week. The mine was safely defused. But that incident and the Jerusalem shooting were seen by the authorities as signs that a new wave of terrorist acts by the Palestine Liberation Organization has begun. The public was warned today to be constantly on the alert for suspicious looking objects on roads and public places and for possibly booby-trapped letters and parcels.
