Beth Israel Synagogue of Derby, Conn., a congregation of the United Synagogue of America, has sent a Jewish New Year’s card to each of the 52 American hostages held in Iron, it was announced by Rabbi Benjamin Kreitman, executive vice president of the United Synagogue of America, the congregational arm of the Conservative Movement of Judaism.
According to Stanley Gampel, president of Beth Israel congregation, who himself was a POW in World War II, the text of the card from the Conservative synagogue said: “As our Holy Days approach, we are thinking of you and pray for year imminent release and for a world of freedom and peace.” The card was signed, “Beth Israel Synagogue.”
The cards were sent to the American Embassy in Teheran. Beth Israel Synagogue in Derby, Conn., has about 150 families affiliated as members. The spiritual leader is Rabbi Aryeh Wineman.
