Israel is tightening its security grip on the West Bank, Deputy Defense Minister Mordechai Zipori reported today during a tour of Jewish settlements in the territory.

He confirmed that the army is building new bases in areas designated to come under the proposed autonomy plan. “The autonomy plan calls for coexistence, with Israel in charge of security, ” Zipori said. “The army will be deployed in its camps in the best way possible for the defense of the State,” he added.

The defense official also spoke of the new network of roads criss-crossing the West Bank. He described the road building as “large scale, ” with heavy equipment being utilized to level the mountainous terrain. However, Zipori refused to say how much these works cost “for fear of possible critics. Everything connected with security is expensive,” he said.
