Funeral services were held today for Nathaniel Goldstein, New York State Attorney General from 1943 through 1954 and a leader in many Jewish and general organizations. He died yesterday in his Manhattan home, apparently from a heart attack, at age 84.
He was particularly proud of his work as Attorney General in an effort which led to the New York State Supreme Court revocation on July 29, 1946 of a charter obtained surreptitiously in 1923 by the Ku Klux Klan in New York State. He sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation names he had obtained of 1100 KKK members and information on links to KKK units elsewhere and to the pro-Nazi German American Bund.
Born on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Goldstein became both an accountant, getting a degree in that field from New York University in 1915, and a lawyer, with a degree in 1918 from New York Law School.
He became in 1954 the first chairman of the board of overseers of the Albert Einstein Medical College of Yeshiva University. He also was active in the Israel Bond Organization, Hebrew University, National Conference of Christians and Jews and the United Jewish Appeal. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the board of overseers of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University.
