A boycott clause in an English version of an Egyptian company’s tender soliciting bids for piping was due to “human error” in translating the Arabic into English, according to Ashraf Ghorbal, Egypt’s Ambassador to the United States.
In a letter to Abraham Foxman, associate director of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, Ghorbal said Egypt “firmly abides” by the commitments it made in the Egyptian-Israeli treaty to stay out of the Arab economic boycott of Israel.
The Ambassador’s reassurance was in response to a March 30 letter from Foxman which called attention to the fact that the conditions laid down by the Alexandria Water General Authority in soliciting bids stipulated that any firm supplying piping must not ship it on blacklisted vessels, on Israeli ships or on those vessels which go to Israeli borders or waters.
