Ambassador Ghassan Tueni of Lebanon said today that his country wants the Security Council to devise “a mechanism for the cessation of hostilities” between Israel and Lebanon. He said that “in the event of non-compliance, we want to invoke Chapter 7” which means the imposition of sanctions under the UN Charter.

It was not clear when the Security Council will resume its debate, begun last Friday, on Israel’s attacks on Lebanon. Tueni said, replying to reporters’ questions, that the Arab group would start this afternoon to work on a draft resulution. The Lebanese Ambassador met today with UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and with the President of the Security Council, Ide Oumarou of Niger.
