Kalman Sultanik, President of the Federation of Polish Jews in the U.S. and a vice president of the World Jewish Congress, today hailed the Polish government for releasing Dr. Marek Edelman, the last surviving commander of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, who chose to remain in Poland following the tragic events of World War II. Marek, who was a commander of the underground Jewish resistance movement in Poland during the war and is now one of the country’s leading cardiologists, was among the thousands of Solidarity officials arrested by Polish authorities since martial law was declared two weeks ago.
