Yaakov Morris, a Belfast-born Israeli diplomat, is to take up his post here this week as minister for public affairs at the Israel Embassy. One of Israel’s most colorful and articulate publicists, Morris previously served as Ambassador in New Zealand and Consul General in India. Now in his midsixties, he was a member of the Hashomer Hatzair movement and emigrated to Israel shortly after the country’s independence. The present Israeli Ambassador, Yehuda Avner, and press counsellor, Yaakov Keynan, are both British-born and Morris’s arrival will reinforce their efforts to boost Israel’s flagging popularity, especially in the Labor and trade union movements, with whom Morris has many contacts.
