A significant new publication dealing with South African Jewry has been published here. The book, “South African Jewry: A Contemporary Survey,” is edited by Prof. Marcus Arkin, director-general of the South African Zionist Federation. It is published by Oxford University Press and is available in all English-speaking countries.
In his introductory remarks, Arkin writes:
“Undoubtedly there remains much to criticize in South Africa (including its Jews insofar as they are members of a privileged society which is based on color discrimination): but unless such criticism is based on factual knowledge rather than subjective hysteria, and on an appreciation of the tremendous complexity of the relevant issues, it will serve little purpose.
“Change in South Africa will have to come about through the effective participation of all groups in the process of deciding their joint future. This is also a basic ingredient not only for internal stability, but also for acceptance by Black Africa and for normalization of relations with the rest of the world. In this process, the role of South African Jewry could be vitally important.”
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
