Anne Henderson Pollard was flown from federal prison in Lexington, Ky., to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Monday night, apparently for a medical evaluation, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was informed Thursday.
According to David Turner, national director of “Justice for the Pollards,” she will be visited there by Dr. Bernard Goldberg, a physician who practices in Chicago.
Anne Pollard, 27, is serving two concurrent five-year sentences as an accomplice after-the-fact in the activities of her husband, Jonathan Pollard, convicted of spying for Israel. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
She has been confined at the maximum security prison in Lexington since March 9, 1987, reportedly ill and without proper medical care.
“On Monday evening, May 9, Anne Pollard was told in the hallway of Lexington prison that she had 5 minutes to pack for a flight to Rochester, Minn., where the Mayo Clinic is located,” Turner told the JTA.
“She was told nothing of the reason for the trip and how long she would be remaining there and not even allowed to telephone her family,” Turner said. “Only on arrival did she learn that she was there to be available for a visit by Dr. Bernard Goldberg, the physician who had operated on her before her arrest in 1985.”
Turner said he received this information from Anne Pollard’s father, Bernard Henderson, who lives in New Jersey and spoke to his daughter by telephone from the Mayo Clinic Monday night.
Turner said several attempts have been made since Anne Pollard was jailed over a year ago to have independent specialists evaluate her condition.
Her lawyer, Nathan Dershowitz, was said to be close to an agreement with “senior Justice Department leadership,” but most of that leadership has since resigned amidst the controversy over Attorney General Edwin Meese, Turner said.
He said “Justice for the Pollards” was founded last year for the purpose of getting both Pollards out of jail. He said it has 10 chapters in several states.
