Israel’s cost-of-living index rose by 1.2 percent last month, some 50 percent higher than anticipated, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced Friday.

The August figure brings inflation for the year so far to 14 percent, dashing Finance Minister Shimon Peres’ hopes of keeping it under 10 percent.

Last month’s rise was attributed to government-initiated price increases of subsidized goods.
