On the eve of the Jewish New Year, the Central Bureau of Statistics has announced that Israel’s population now stands at slightly less than 5.6 million.

The Jewish population grew by more than 100,000 to 4.5 million people.

Jews comprise 81 percent of the population; Arabs, 14.5 percent; Christians, 2.9 percent and Druse, 1.7 percent.

Some 82,000 immigrants – 70,000 of them from the former Soviet Union – arrived is Israel during the past 12 months.
