Europe and Israel will soon have a television channel with Jewish programming.
In early 1998, the Shalom Channel plans to begin broadcasting simultaneously in Paris, London, Moscow and Tel Aviv.
The channel, which will be available by subscription on cable or satellite, will offer a variety of news and cultural programs, including documentaries, religious discussion shows, language lessons and programs about Jewish tradition.
In addition, the channel will broadcast entertainment programs, such as talk shows, films, and sports and youth programs — all with Jewish themes.
It will also offer coverage of major events from Israeli television.
The channel will broadcast in English, French and Hebrew.
Its $13.6 million annual operating budget is expected to be provided from subscriptions as well as from advertising and the sale of its programs to other networks.
The channel, which hopes to have at least 50,000 subscribers by late 1998, will have an advisory board made up of representatives of the Jewish community who will advise the channel’s management about the quality and content of its programs.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
