A Likud Party activist has petitioned Israel’s High Court of Justice to try a former Shin Bet operative in connection with the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
The petition accuses former General Security Service agent Avishai Raviv of lying during the trial of Hagai Amir, the brother of Yigal Amir, Rabin’s convicted assassin.
Ron Turjian said in his petition that Raviv lied on the stand when he testified that he did not work for the GSS.
The petitioner further noted that the prosecution was aware of Raviv’s activities and allowed him to lie.
Carmi Gillon, the head of the Shin Bet when Rabin was assassinated, admitted in November that Aviv worked for the Shin Bet.
Classified sections of the Shamgar Commission report into the assassination, which were released this year, described Raviv as a “problematic agent” active in the extreme right-wing camp, who often provoked other activists to action.
After the release of the classified section of the report, representatives for Hagai Amir, who was convicted of conspiracy to murder the prime minister, said his conviction should be reconsidered because Raviv’s perjury had hindered Amir’s defense.
