Israel and the Palestinian Authority cooperated on Sunday’s arrest of two Israeli Arabs Sunday night who were suspected of being on their way to carry out a terrorist attack in Jerusalem.
Israeli Public Security Minister Avigdor Kahalani said the two, residents of southern Israel, were members of Hamas. They were detained at separate roadblocks set up by security forces overnight.
“We are in the middle of the investigation now. But what we know is that these people were ready to carry out some kind of attack,” Kahalani said.
Israeli media reported that one of the suspects told his family the previous night he intended on carrying out a suicide attack against Israel.
Kahalani said security cooperation with the Palestinian Authority helped lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
Palestinian sources said that the previous night security officials in Hebron had contacted Israel with information that two terrorists from the fundamentalist Islamic organization were on their way from southern Israel to carry out a terrorist attack.
Israeli police, already on a high state of alert amid warnings of planned attacks, erected roadblocks around the entrance to the capital and in other places in the country.
