Violence erupted during demonstrations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip marking what Palestinians term “al-nakba,” Arabic for “the catastrophe” caused by the creation of the Jewish state on May 14, 1948. Palestinian officials said eight Palestinians were killed in Gaza when a crowd confronted Israeli troops. In Jerusalem, Israeli mounted police charged into a crowd of Palestinians protesters.
