Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is considering holding a referendum on a further Israeli redeployment from the West Bank. A senior aide to Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat said such a referendum would be a “waste of time.” The comments came a day after an Israeli newspaper reported that U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright set a deadline of July 24 for Netanyahu to reply to the U.S. proposal for a second Israeli redeployment in the West Bank.
