The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on legislation that would give federal officials new authority to prosecute hate crimes against women, the disabled and gays and lesbians. Under current law, the government must prove that a hate crime occurred because of a person’s race or religion. The Hate Crimes Protection Act is supported by President Clinton, a bipartisan group of lawmakers and a broad range of civil rights groups, including the Anti-Defamation League.
