ROME, July 14 (JTA) — Dr. Amos Luzzatto has been elected leader of Italy’s Jewish community. Luzzatto, 70, replaces Tullia Zevi, who stepped down last month as president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities after 16 years in office. Luzzatto was elected president Monday at the first meeting of the new board of the Union that was chosen at the group’s policy-making Congress last month. A physician living in Venice, Luzzatto is also a respected scholar in Jewish studies and has long been an active participant in interreligious dialogue. There are some 31,000 Jews living in Italy.
