Former Israeli army chief Amnon Shahak rejected a call from opposition leader Ehud Barak to join the Labor Party. Shahak informed Barak that he intends to run for prime minister himself should new elections be held. During a meeting with Shahak, Barak appealed to him to change his plans, saying his candidacy would only split the left-wing vote in a race against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
