Jordan’s King Abdullah told American Jewish leaders Monday morning that Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak’s recent election has created a “clear mandate to move ahead” toward peace in the Middle East. Responding to questions about recent Palestinian activity in the United Nations, including a newfound reliance on the 1947 U.N. Partition Plan as the basis for Palestinian statehood, the Hashemite monarch told the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations that “the maneuvering of the last few months” was “a direct reaction to the election process” in Israel.
